NLR high speed chase ends in officer involved shooting

GRANT COUNTY, Ark. (KTHV)- On Thursday, a car theft in Jacksonville lead to a high speed chase in North Little Rock, ending in an officer involved shooting in Sheridan.

According to North Little Rock Police Chief Mike Davis, it started with a suspect robbing his girlfriend in Jacksonville, taking her phone and car. Police said he drove to North Little Rock where North Little Rock police were able to find him by the tracking device in the stolen car.

Davis said it then escalated. “He started going through yards, avoiding the stop sticks, he almost struck an officer that was out with the stop sticks.”

The suspect got back on the interstate and the high speed chase continued.

The high speed chase made its way into Grant County on Keg Mill Road where the suspect wrecked his car. That's when the situation turned deadly.

Davis said the police officer and canine officer got out of their car, “with the subject still in the vehicle the officer knocked the suspect’s window out and put the dog inside the car to try and end this.”

Then, the suspect started stabbing the dog in the face, “the subject got out of the vehicle at that time with a knife and came at the officer, then the officer fired at the subject and struck the subject.”

The suspect was air lifted from the scene and taken to UAMS where he died. The canine officer is okay and being treated for his injuries, as for the other officer, he’s been put on leave with counseling until the investigation is over.
