NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Today's treatments for depression and anxiety leave much to be desired.
Pharmaceuticals may help the symptoms, but they can also have negative side effects. Stacy Kinzler was battling with anxiety and depression when she realized yoga was her medicine.
"I am somebody who can be anxious and who can be and become a little depressed some times. If I am consistently coming to class, if I'm consistently practicing at home it makes a big difference in my life," she said.
Kinzler, a psychotherapist herself, started attending yoga classes and immediately felt inspired to help others. This prompted her to incorporate yoga in her therapy practice.
"A lot of people try medication and it does work really well for some people and some people it just doesn't. It affects them physically, they don't feel well on it," she said.
Kinzler began working with Stacey Reynolds, a certified yoga therapist at Blue Yoga Nyla in North Little Rock, to give her clients a yoga class that's tailored to their specific mental health needs.
"Whether its physical, emotional, spiritual. We deal with the subtle body and we go a little bit deeper, uncover and discover where someone is carrying their tension or their pain," Reynolds said.
Reynolds said yoga helps people in recovery specifically because it forces people to come into their breath and focus on their mind and body.
"We start to uncover really what their carrying and how long they've been carrying it, we work to release that. We do use postures and very restorative practice to release some of that tension,” Reynolds said.
Reynolds has seen it work first hand.
"When you see someone come to the other side of what is a life or death moment, it changes you, it changed me. It's why I get up and do this every morning," she said.
