NLR volunteers provide a bus stop breakfast every Monday

Motivating and feeding kids on the bus stop

NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) – Kids in a North Little Rock neighborhood are getting a quick snack along with some morning motivation before heading to school. And now it's becoming a tradition at Eastgate Terrace.

Early in the morning before schools, nearly 30 kids waiting on the buss enjoy breakfast and a little motivation.

“There had been a fight at the bus stop,” said Joanna Dennis, a volunteer from Step Ministries. “It upset us that the children were starting there day like that.”

So for over a year now, volunteers from Step Ministries come every Monday to spread a little joy

“We haven’t heard of any more fights at the bus stop.”

Officer Tommy Norman with the North Little Rock police department also has started to attend the Monday bus stop breakfasts.

"They come out here with me and the ladies from step ministries as a way to really boost their self-esteem as they start the week,” said Norman. “It's really a win-win situation for a lot of people."

Parent Chiquita Clayborn comes every Monday and said she see the change the breakfast has brought.

"It makes a lot of difference,” said Clayborn. “The kids go to school with a little something on their stomachs and happy because they see them every Monday morning."

The breakfast often has hot chocolate, cereal, muffins, and fruit.

"I think it lets them know that somebody other than their moms and dads love them and the community,” said Dennis.

Norman also stressed the importance of the breakfast tradition.

"These kids will remember this 20 or 30 years from now to know that on every Monday morning throughout the school year someone was here to take the time to care for them,” said Norman.

Step Ministries in North Little Rock said you can help out by donating breakfast foods or simply come out and help.

Another option they suggest is helping out another bus stop in need.
