LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) – In Arkansas, you will never run out of things to do or see.
THV11 is kicking off our “Outdoors in Arkansas” week, featuring fun outdoor activities you and your family can enjoy right here in the Natural State.
We're always telling kids and even adults to put down the cell phone and go outside. But for this activity, you can pick up that phone on your way outside and get ready for some fun.
“It's kind of a modern day scavenger hunt or treasure hunt.”
We’re talking about geocaching. There are millions of geocaches hidden around the world, and chances are there is probably one near you right now.
“It’s been an event and an activity that a lot of people enjoy, a lot of people consider it a sport now,” said Pinnacle Mountain State Park interpreter, Rachel Rodell.
So what is a geocache and how do you find it?
“A cache can be pretty much anything. Tupperware, ammo box, anything that contains whatever is inside the cache. Sometimes it might be something hidden under a rock,” said Rodell.
There are 52 geocaches hidden across all of Arkansas's state parks, and you can find them with the help of your phone.
“It works pretty simply, it works on GPS coordinates, so our modern day smart phones are really great for that."
There's kind of one organization that's the primary holder of all the geocaches and it’s just called geocaching.com.”
The site gives you coordinates and clues, like the size of the cache, and difficulty level of the terrain around it, helping guide you to the prize.
“Maybe in an ammo box you have a toy plastic horse and maybe you take the horse and leave a pen or pencil for someone else to find.”
It’s a fun way to explore the Natural State literally off the beaten path.
“Even if you're attached to your phone and you don't want to be away from it—this is the best outdoor activity for you. You can be on your phone looking for the cache but you're also out in nature exploring the state and our wonderful parks.”
You can visit geocaching.com or download the app on your iTunes or android app stores to get started.
