Personal trainer, gym owner battles cancer with fitness

Arkansas personal trainer fights cancer with fitness

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- You have cancer. The terrifying words no one ever wants to hear.

As people get ready to celebrate those who beat cancer, and remember those they’ve lost during breast cancer awareness month, THV11 spoke with one survivor who embraces life while inspiring others. Personal trainer and gym owner, Kim Leverett, helps clients build strong and resilient bodies.

It's hard to tell now, but four years ago Leverett faced the biggest physical challenge of her life. A pain in her arm pit prompted Leverett to visit her doctor.

"After about two weeks it remained there and I thought I should probably get this checked out," Leverett said.

That's when the physically fit mother of three learned she had breast cancer.

"It's a devastating piece of news to find out that you have any type of illness.  Especially, when you're as active as I am," she said.

Leverett underwent surgery, chemo and radiation. Never missing a workout or a training session.

"When I found out one of the things I heard was oh my gosh, you're so fit. That doesn't really have anything to do with it, but it does help the process go smoother," she said.

Leverett contributes fitness and healthy eating to her victory over cancer. She also said early detection is key.

"I knew that I could get through it.  There wasn't a day that I didn't think I would survive.  There was some really bad days, there were some days that I cried, there were days I felt literally like a garbage can, but I never gave up," Leverett said.
