Police chief honored more than a century later

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - On Friday, a Little Rock police chief was honored.

Chief George Counts served as the Capitol's Police Chief from 1878 to1883.

Little is recorded in history about Chief Counts and his administration, but the Little Rock Police Department held a dedication service on Friday at the Mount Holly Cemetery in his memory.

"Anytime you have the opportunity to honor a police officer who has served honorably and with distinction, we take that opportunity," said Stuart Thomas, LRPD Police Chief.

Up until today, Counts' grave was unmarked, but thanks to a search by his family and the geneological society, they were able to identify and finally engrave his tombstone.
