Preparations underway for Little Rock Marathon

Preps underway for LR Marathon weekend

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- In its 15 year, the Little Rock Marathon has grown into a huge event and is recognized as a destination for runners across the nation and the world.

From space blankets to keep runners warm after they finish to holding racks for medals. Geneva Hampton, Executive Director of the Little Rock Marathon says preparations are well underway for the Little Rock Marathon.

"We have all 50 states and D.C. and 11 different countries," said Hampton.

The marathon, along with a half-marathon takes place Sunday morning, finishing on Main Street in downtown Little Rock. Around 7,000 participants will take to the Little Rock streets this weekend. New this year, an app to help spectators and participants.

"The app is really kind of really the race in your hand.  You can find out details and parking," said Hampton.

Hampton said, one of the best locations to watch the race is along the last mile of the course.

"Coming from the Capitol it's just beautiful and it's kind of that lonely part of the course where we could sure use a lot of spectators," she said.

Marathon organizers also encourage those coming to watch to cheer and even make a sign.

"You'd be surprised some of the things you remember and some of the silly signs you remember when you're running a marathon.  Some of the silly things can cause you to have a memory for years," Hampton said.

Drivers should expect several downtown streets to be closed on both Saturday and Sunday mornings. The area around the start and finish will remained close until the afternoon.

"Pretty much.  Capital, Main and Scott will probably be closed until about 3:30," Hampton said.

It's estimated that the Marathon brings in excess of more than $6,000,000 in tourism dollars.
