Put War Memorial under parks department, governor urges

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas' governor is proposing that the state's parks and tourism department take over control of Little Rock's War Memorial Stadium.

Governor Asa Hutchinson says giving the Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism oversight will "provide stability" for the stadium. The move would require approval from the Legislature.

The University of Arkansas' football team is under contract to play one game at War Memorial each season until 2018, but no deal has been announced beyond that.

Hutchinson also called for a study to determine the future of the 68-year-old stadium, which has a capacity of about 54,000 seats. The governor said he supports holding Razorbacks games in Little Rock but said it's the university's decision.

The governor has previously proposed cutting the stadium's funding in half, beginning July 1, 2018.
