Shots fired near Movies in the Park

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - A family night out ended with shots fired on a crowded River Market street. It happened just after Movies in the Park on Wednesday night.

"Actually, I had just got off work, and we were walkin' down to our cars," said waitress Kayla Walley. "All of a sudden, all the cops were just clearing everybody out."

She had just closed up at Gus' Fried Chicken when she saw commotion outside.

"Everybody was going crazy running around but everyone was like ahh!" she said. "The cops had everything blocked off to try to get everybody cleared out."

Little Rock Police Department Lieutenant Sidney Allen said it happened just after the movie ended.

There isn't a suspect yet, but witnesses said they saw teens running from the scene.

"What happened was the teenagers went out into the crowd somewhere around Clinton and Ottenheimer and discharged about three rounds into the air," Lt. Sidney Allen said. "None of the shots hit anyone. We're fortunate, in that matter, that the person did discharge the weapon in the air."

The question now is whether there is enough security at the event.

"We already increased security for the event two weeks ago, there were two officers in an off-duty capacity working inside of the event and now there are four," Lt. Allen said. "They're going to re-evaluate that to see if they need to go up from four officers."

Lt. Allen said police are still reviewing security footage to see if they can make out a suspect, but he said he believes it is an isolated incident.

Little Rock Convention Bureau President Gretchen Hall hopes this doesn't deter people from attending the event in the future.

"We at LRCVB along with city officials and LRPD are meeting to make sure that if we need to increase security measures that we'll do that," Hall said. "We are dedicated to making sure that everyone is safe in Movies at the Park as we move forward."

SWAT team members will now be in the River Market during movies in the park. They'll be patrolling between 9 and 11 when the movie is ending so they have more bodies in the area.
