SHERWOOD, Ark. (KTHV) -- Thousands of volunteers from Southern Baptist churches all over the state came to North Pulaski County Saturday to lend a helping hand.
There are over 1,500 Southern Baptist churches in Arkansas. A one-day event was reserved by the Arkansas Baptist State Convention for people in Sherwood and North Little Rock to come out and enjoy over 150 free services.
Randy Naylor came out to help fix up homes in Sherwood.
“We’re rebuilding the front porch and the back porch. We’re changing all the pacer boards and painting the house. Trying to make it look a little bit better,” Naylor said.
Over 2,000 volunteers came out to help out in any way they could. Ariana Hudson was getting her outside porch fixed by Naylor and others. She said this will help give kids a safe place to play.
“It’s awesome. So awesome,” Hudson said. “The little kids love sitting on the porch and watching all the big kids going around and play, but I almost fell one day when part of the porch broke and that’s when we knew we needed to get it fixed.”
But fixing up homes was not the only service volunteers offered.
"We're going to feed over 11,00 people today,” Community Admissions Strategist Breck Freeman said. “We’re doing sites across this association in Sherwood, North Little Rock, Jacksonville area.”
Block parties, food distribution and free medical services were among the other services people in North Pulaski County could enjoy. With a day full of service complete, Southern Baptist Volunteers are walking away knowing they made someone's day.
"Helping other people is what it's all about. I mean. We’re really helping ourselves when we're helping other people," Naylor said.
This is the tenth year of the one-day mission trip. The trip targets a different area of Arkansas every year.
