Monday, during a regular city meeting, Redus fired police Chief John Howell.
Howell was chief for about four years. During this time, crime in Pine Bluff has gone down, according to police department stats. Still, in 2009, 15 people were killed, making the city one of the nation's deadliest small towns, according the FBI .
In an article, Howell says Redus fired him for defending the police department against the mayor's accusations officers aren't doing enough.
Aldermen Bill Brumett says the mayor didn't consult the City Council before firing Howell.
"It almost makes you think that maybe there's something just not right, and it has got me very concerned," says Brumett. "I was shocked because I really thought that Chief Howell had done a good job as far as really leading the department in the right direction."
It seems the only one with the answer as to why Redus fired Howell is Redus and so far he's not giving details.
Today's THV did speak to Redus by phone Monday night on the "THV 10:00 Difference," and he would only say "Chief Howell is no longer the man to lead the department".
Brumett says he expects to have more information about Redus' decision during next Monday's city council meeting.
