PINE BLUFF, Ark. (AP) -- Pine Bluff Mayor Carl Redus says he plans to challenge the accuracy of U.S. Census Bureau results for the city.

Census numbers put Pine Bluff's population in 2010 at 49,083. That's down 10 percent from 2000 and marks the first time since the mid-1960s that Pine Bluff's population has been below 50,000.

Redus says he thinks pre-census estimates that showed Pine Bluff slightly above 50,000 were correct.

He says Pine Bluff officials have done all they could to keep the population from falling under 50,000 but that the number is "a symbolic mark" that "doesn't have as much a negative impact as one may think."
