Park Plaza Mall, Little Rock
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Little Rock police say there is an officer involved shooting at Park Plaza Mall just before 3:00 p.m.
A THV crew was at the site minutes later. They were told that an off-duty police officer working as security at the mall approached a vehicle for an unknown reason with three people inside.
The officer then felt threatened and pulled his weapon and fired at the vehicle, hitting one of the people inside. The other two people inside the vehicle fled the scene across University, but were apprehended. The third person, the one shot, was taken to a local hospital.
The shooting occurred in the lower parking deck of the mall and right now it is closed off to people entering and leaving the mall.
The driver, Joseph Williams, 29, was shot at least once in the chest, but is stable. He lives on Baseline Road, but was apprehended at 6000 W. Markham, not far from the mall.
Keithen Pettus, 20, from North Little Rock, was in the passenger seat. He was shot once in the face. His injuries are non-life threatening and he has been released from the hospital.
Pettus attempted to flee the scene, but was apprehended in the 300 block of N. Pierce.
Johnnie Campbell, another passenger, was not injured.
"We have been able to talk to one or two people who have been able to provide our officers with some information," said Sgt. Davis.
All the commotion came as a surprise to shoppers leaving the mall Tuesday afternoon.
"We very rarely come here and so to pull up for the first time and see all this is a little scary because we live in a town of 300," said Debbie Erdelen of Havana.
"We weren't here when it happened and now that we know, we know just to look around if we ever come back up this way," said Kay Carr of West Memphis.
Sgt. Davis says the incident was isolated.
"Whatever was involved was between these people so there is no real reason to feel threatened as a shopper coming out," said Sgt. Davis.
LRPD tells us the investigation is ongoing and interviews are still being conducted. No charges have been filed at this time.
