UNDATED (USA TODAY) -- Jessica Redfield, an NHL blogger based in Denver, was one of the 12 reported fatalities in a shooting in Aurora, Colo. movie theater.
A gunman, who is in custody, stood at the front of the theater and fired into the crowd about 12:30 a.m. MT at a multiplex theater in a mall in Aurora, police said.
Redfield had been tweeting friends prior to the start of The Dark Knight Rises, her last post read:
@jessespector MOVIE DOESN'T START FOR 20 MINUTES
Redfield was also at the scene of the Eaton Centre shooting in Toronto in June, and the last entry of her personal blog recounts that event:
"I can't get this odd feeling out of my chest. This empty, almost sickening feeling won't go away. I noticed this feeling when I was in the Eaton Center in Toronto just seconds before someone opened fire in the food court. An odd feeling which led me to go outside and unknowingly out of harm's way. It's hard for me to wrap my mind around how a weird feeling saved me from being in the middle of a deadly shooting."
Redfield, whose given name is Jessica Ghawi, recently moved from San Antonio to Denver where she was interning at 104.3 The Fan.
"She was so happy and so jovial all the time," said Ticket 760 AM radio host Mike Taylor. "It's shocking. It's stunning."
Ghawi interned at the San Antonio station in the fall of 2010 before heading to the Denver area, Taylor said.
Ghawi's brother, Jordan, posted the details of a phone call he received from his mother early this morning on his personal blog:
"At approximately 0215 CST, I received an hysterical, and almost unintelligible, phone call from my mother stating that my sister, Jessica Ghawi, had been shot while attending the midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Denver, CO. I was able to contact the man that was with my sister, mutual friend Brent Lowak, who stated that they were in the theatre when an incendiary device was fired into the crowd and that shots rang out immediately afterwards. Brent further stated that he took two rounds and that my sister took one round followed by an additional round which appeared to strike her in the head. At this time, I do not have confirmation that she is alive or dead. Brent has been transported with non-life threatening injuries to a local hospital. I am on the next flight out of San Antonio to Denver and have already contact Aurora PD, operating jurisdiction, as next of kin."
Ghawi also contributed to the BustedCoverage.com, a sports and entertainment site. Busted Coverage's Editor-in-chief Joe Kinsey saw the news of his former colleague's passing early Friday morning.
"I saw somebody had retweeted a message that Jessica Ghawi had died, aspiring sportscaster," Kinsey said. "I was like, 'OK I need to look that up.' I need to see who this person was. When I did a google search, I just couldn't believe it. I was literally shaking."
Kinsey remembers Ghawi as an insatiable reporter and authentic person.
"She'd call and be like, 'I have this idea,' or 'Hey, I wanted to run this by you' or 'I was up late working on a post and I wanted to see what you thought," Ghawi. "There are very few times on the Internet that you come across people who are genuine. She was."
When asked about Ghawi's final blog entry, Kinsey slowed.
"It's hard to fathom that she experienced that and then this happened," Kinsey said, swallowing. "It's almost like she was writing about her own death. The thing to remember is she only wrote two pieces on that blog. One was the first hockey post that I ever saw and the other one was the tragedy in Toronto. It's unreal to think that that is what she left. It boggles my mind."
