MIDLAND CITY, Ala. (AP) - Police in Alabama continue to tread carefully in dealing with a man holed up in a bunker on his property, accused of holding a 5-year-old boy hostage.

The boy was taken off a school bus on Tuesday, and the suspect is accused of killing the driver.

Residents of Midland City have been holding vigils for the driver and the boy.

Former hostage negotiators say authorities must be cautious and patient and that's how police are handling things so far.

Authorities are talking with the gunman, identified by neighbors as Jimmy Lee Dykes, and they are delivering medicine to the boy.
