Surprise engagement between ASU cheerleaders before national competition

JONESBORO, Ark. (KTHV) – An Arkansas State cheerleader surprised his teammate/girlfriend by proposing to her during a performance Wednesday.

The YouTube video that captured the proposal has gotten over 9,000 views.

The two cheerleaders, Kelsie Roland and Collin Weatherly, were performing at Arkansas State University showcasing their routine for the Universal Cheerleaders Association College Cheerleading National Championship when Bruno Mars’ “Marry Me” started playing.

“I had no clue what was going on,” said Roland.

The video shows Howl, the ASU mascot, coming out in a tuxedo with a giant ring box and lip-syncing before Weatherly takes his place and then proposes to Roland.

“When I saw him looking for me, that’s when I knew it was really happening."

“It was the best moment of my life," said Roland

Very few people knew the proposal was going to happen until the day of, according to Roland.

“He asked my parents months in advance and my cheer coach and the mascot helped plan the proposal.  The day of he set up a secret group text message to let the cheer team and a few other people know,” said Roland.

Taylor Roberts, a friend of Roland’s, knew about the proposal and said that all the students who knew had their cameras out and ready for the big moment.

On Thursday, the couple arrived at Disney World for the UCA College Nationals, according to the A-State Spirit twitter page.  Roland said that being in Disney World the day after getting engaged was “just truly magical.”
