BENTON, Ark. (KTHV) – A teen who was killed in an officer-involved shooting has been identified.

According to the Benton Police Department, a 17-year-old, later identified by the Harmony Grove School District as Keagan Schweikle, was reported to be in possession of a handgun when officers responded to a family disturbance on the 1200 block of River Oaks late Monday morning.

Police say the boy fled into a nearby wooded area and refused commands by the officer to put down the weapon. Police said the officer shot the teenager after he pointed the weapon at the officer. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Per departmental policy, the officer involved has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. The name of the officer involved has not been released at this time.

Counselors will be available for students at the Harmony Grove School District.
