STUTTGART, Ark. (KTHV)- A Stuttgart family is mourning the death of a loved one. 20-year old Daniel Ruffin died Thursday morning after being shot in the chest. Ruffin was walking his dog on 13th and South Maple Street in Stuttgart Tuesday evening.
His mother was at a loss for words."Why? Why would somebody do this?," Ruffin's mother, Vera Stage asked. "He was a good kid, didn't even know them."
Police took three teenage men into custody hours after the incident. After thoroughly questioning them, Assistant Chief Steven Bobo said two of them were released. "I don't believe they were necessarily involved in what happened," said Bobo. "That might come more to light later on."
Bobo said it doesn't appear the men knew Ruffin. "There was no robbery involved, they seem to have no involvement." He said it seems to have been a random act of violence.
Ruffin's cousin, Amanda Fortner saw the teenagers walk into their family store just before the shooting. "I waited on him, I believe he got a drink and maybe a bag of chips," said Fortner. "He exited and then I didn't pay them further attention."
Police used the surveillance camera installed in the family's produce store to identify the suspect.
The name of the 17-year old in custody has not been released. He was initially charged with battery, and those charges were upgraded to capital murder after Ruffin died Thursday morning. He will be arraigned on the new charges by the end of the week.
