LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Dr. Juliana Bonilla-Velez received the Exemplary Senior Trainee Award in the Women in Otolaryngology (WIO) section.
She is the only resident surgeon in the United States to receive this award in the field of Otolaryngology. This award is given to recognize an outstanding female senior resident or fellow in an Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery training program who demonstrates excellence in leadership, research, education, and/or mentoring.
In order to win this award, Dr. Bonilla-Velez had to be nominated by her program director at UAMS.
This year she also won The Seymour R. Cohen Award for Pediatric Laryngology and Broncho-Esophagology. This award was won for having the best original paper in basic research or clinical investigation.
In addition to winning numerous awards, she is also the founder of the International Journal of Medical Students. Her goal in creating the organization was to make a space where medical students could promote research, provide a way for research to be published that would include all specialties, and learn how to create a high-quality paper.
Dr. Bonilla-Velez is originally from Colombia and did her medical training there before coming to Little Rock. She is a resident surgeon at UAMS. She has accepted a fellowship in Pediatric Otolaryngology at the Seattle Children's Hospital, starting in 2018.
