LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - As the summer heats up, people in Arkansas are trying to stay cool and one part of staying cool is staying hydrated.
We've heard that we should be drinking at least eight 8 ounce glasses of water a day. But how scientific is that recommendation?
"Each of us needs to drink adequate amounts of fluids, but there's not a one size fits all answer," said Doctor Robert Hopkins, a doctor at UAMS.
Hopkins said while the recommendation is "not necessarily true," it's a good start to staying hydrated.
He said the misconception could've originated from a 1945 recommendation from the Food and Nutrition Board. That board advised to intake at least 2.5 liters of water a day, but Hopkins said the next sentence said that "most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods."
"If you spend most of your time of the day in the air conditioning where we pull the moisture out of the air and you're losing moisture all the time, that's probably not an unreasonable target," Hopkins explained, "but if you're working out in the heat of Arkansas this time of the year that's probably nowhere near enough."
The doctor explained that we should increase our daily water intake in the summer by at least 20 percent. He said that the body is good about telling you when you're at risk of dehydration.
You may have also heard that you need to drink half of your weight in ounces of water per day. He verified that there is no scientific evidence behind that old adage.
