Visitation held for Newport officer killed in the line of duty

Just three days ago, Lieutenant Patrick Weatherford was killed in the line of duty.

NEWPORT, Ark. (KTHV) -- The mourning has continued and the goodbyes have begun in Newport.

Just three days ago, Lieutenant Patrick Weatherford was killed in the line of duty. He was a 15 year veteran of the Newport Police Department.

“A lot of officers sometimes get a little ego, but not Patrick. He was down to earth. He was the guy you could call,” said Andy May.

While the town is losing an officer, many said they are also losing a friend to all.

“He will be severely missed. He’s loved by everybody and this town will not be the same,” said Dale Shirley.

Bridget Hendrix is a former Newport police officer. She has fond memories of Weatherford.

“I was fortunate enough to get to be his training officer,” said Hendrix. “Patrick always laughed. He laughed about everything.”

Hendrix worked closely with Weatherford. Many of her memories of him include laughter and some include singing.

“We would pat our ammo patches singing ‘Captain Kangaroo’ to each other and we would reach over the console and sing at each other. His head would flip back and his mouth would open and he would laugh,” she recalled.

A husband and father to two, Weatherford was known as a family man and someone who wore his badge with honor.

“He was the one that would take every situation, deescalate it, and remind them ‘you committed the crime, I’m doing my job. Now, where do you want to go in life and how can we help you get there?’ That’s the officer Patrick Weatherford was,” said Hendrix.

As the memories will help them get through, it’s a loss those in Newport will never forget.

“I promise you that no matter what we do in the city of Newport, we will never be able to find somebody that will replace him and fill the shoes that he wore,” said May.

Weatherford’s funeral is set for June 16 at 11 a.m. at the Newport campus of Arkansas State University.
