Volunteers help out in Ferndale

FERNDALE, Ark. (KTHV) - The EF-4 tornado spun up just a few miles west of Ferndale. The western Pulaski County town was hit hard, but so far hasn't gotten much assistance.

The Pleasant Grove Baptist Church is home base for volunteer organizers, and they're hoping to see a lot more new faces in the next few days.

The scene is a path of destruction as far as the eye can see, and it happened in a matter of 30 seconds.

David Richy is one of the lucky ones. His Ferndale home is still standing, but the tornado did serious damage to his property and much of the surrounding community.

"God definitely held his hand out and protected my family," said Richy.

At the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, donations have been pouring in, which is a huge relief for people like Richy. It does take a lot of hands to sort through it all.

The work out here is hard and slow-going. Those who have been at it for days said it's draining them, but they're finding strength in the least likely of places.

"I just want to say Arkansas strong. This little ornament made it through the storm just like Arkansas' people are gonna make it through the storm," said Carol Oberste, a volunteer.

So, if you want to help in this area just come to the church. They'll be happy to see you and your time will be very well-spent.
