Yell Co. Sheriff confirms identity of hiker who fell from Mount Nebo

YELL COUNTY, Ark. (KTHV) -- Yell County Sheriff Bill Gilkey confirmed that a Pope County man has died in a hiking accident in Mount Nebo State Park.

Gilkey confirmed to THV11 that the victim fell from Mount Nebo on Friday.  He was later identified as Pope County attorney John Burnett.

Park officials and area law enforcement investigated the death, which occurred along the Rim Trail. 

Gilkey said that Burnett slipped on some rocks along the trail, falling about 40 feet before coming to rest. 

Barnett was a former Atkins city judge and served as a public defender for Johnson County.  He was a graduate of Atkins high school, Arkansas Tech University, and University of Arkansas School of Law. 

He was a father of five children.
