GATES COUNTY, NC (CNN/WAVY) -- Surveillance video captured a burglary suspect taking a nap after spending several minutes trying to break into a store.

The Tarheel Bar-B-Q on Highway 13 in Gates County is known for the obvious. The family owned restaurant has been around for more than 50 years. In that the owners have seen a lot but labor day brought a first. Owner Ricky Hedgepeth says, "It just makes you mad what you worked for all your life and somebody tries to take it from you."

The source behind the anger is this man. He showed up at the restaurant around 5 Monday afternoon. Hedgepeth says, "I couldn't believe how long he stayed."

Hedgepeth showed the video from that day. As you can see a stranger tried to break in the back door. Hedgepeth says, "I was just surprised that he never looked around to see if anybody was watching him it was like he didn't care."

What was watching was a camera. The man first picked up a shovel and he tried and tried, but the door wouldn't budge. A butcher knife was his next effort that too didn't work so he tried something else. Hedgepeth says, "Now he's got both shovels at the same time."

This went on for almost 30 minutes but all that effort comes with a price. Hedgepeth says, "You can look at him and tell that he's pretty tired."

Yup, tired. The suspect gave up. Watch as he goes and sits down and winds up falling asleep. Hedgepeth says, "It's just unbelievable, and then to lay down and sleep."

He got a pretty good nap. Notice how the sun starts to set. The shadows creep and soon the back light comes on; a three hour nap before waking up and leaving. Hedgepeth says, "I think I would have give up long before now."

He walked away empty handed but if deputies find him, he'll be holding an arrest warrant. Hedgepeth says, "He didn't steal anything from me but if I can help stop him from doing it to me again or to somebody else that's what my main goal is."

Deputies are still looking for the suspect.
