LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The Little Rock Zoo has received accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums after its request for accreditation was tabled a year ago.
The zoo announced the accreditation on Tuesday.
Accreditation was tabled in 2011 because of concerns about the zoo's long-term financial stability. Those questions were resolved with the passage of a one-cent sales tax by the city in September.
The tax will provide an estimated $1.6 million for operations and about $8 million for capital improvements during the next 10 years.
The zoo was first accredited in 2001 and was re-accredited in 2006 before its accreditation was tabled last year.
