WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Barack Obama welcomed the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic teams to the White House Friday, calling the athletes a portrait of what the country is all about.

The president, first lady Michelle Obama and Vice President Joe Biden greeted the Olympians on the White House lawn and praised them for both their athletic achievements and for being ambassadors for the country on the world stage.

The athletes then presented the president and first lady with the flag carried at the opening ceremonies.

The United States won 104 medals at the London games, including 46 gold medals.
