CONWAY, Ark. (KTHV) - Conway Police are looking for a rapist who broke into a woman's home and attacked her early Friday morning. It happened with her toddler asleep in the apartment.
Today's THV has learned the woman is okay. She went to the hospital for evaluation and was later released. Authorities say she did have some scratches on her legs from climbing out of bathroom window to escape this attack. It happened just before 4 a.m. Friday with screams for help that were heard by neighbors.
Shameca Pearson recently moved to her Conway neighborhood. And up until Friday morning, there was no trouble around here.
"I woke up about three something and I heard somebody yelling help and was screaming kind of like banging on something," Pearson said.
Pearson went outside to look around, didn't see anything and headed back to bed. But she'd heard that yelling for some ten to fifteen minutes.
"This has been alleged that a man, who she didn't know, came into her home and raped her, people need to know that," Conway police spokeswoman LaTresha Woodruff said.
Woodruff said the suspect broke into the woman's home through a window, attacked her in bed and later took her to the bathroom where the assault occurred.
"She had the presence of mind to take whatever opportunity she found to get away from this person and it's a good thing she did," Woodruff said.
Woodruff says that's because authorities found one of the woman's kitchen knives on the floor. And the victim, who escaped through a window, didn't know how the knife got there.
"It puts me in a position where I don't think I want to sleep very well at night now," Pearson said.
Pearson is on edge after learning about this case and wishing she'd done more.
"It makes me wish that I would have come out here and did a little bit more investigation and try to figure out what was going on because if I could help I would have," Pearson said.
As far as a suspect, police say the woman could only describe him as white, about 5'10'' with a bit of belly. Another neighbor told us off camera that he saw the man leave the home and noticed a buzzed haircut, baggy, black shorts and skinny legs.
As for the victim's daughter, she is fine. The attacker never touched her. The victim actually watched him leave her apartment after a neighbor called 911 and she ran back inside to get her daughter.
