BARLING, Ark. (AP) - Voters in the western Arkansas city of Barling are to decide in November whether to allow liquor sales, but a quirk in the law may leave the vote open to challenge.
Sebastian County Election Prosecutor Dan Shue researched the law and found that the entire southern half of Sebastian County voted to go dry in April 1994 - not just Barling.
At the time, the county had upper and lower districts. County Election Commission Chairman Lee Webb says that raises a question whether Barling can legally proceed to turn the city wet, since the vote to turn it dry involved half the county.
The Southwest Times Record reports that Shue wanted the election commission to be aware of the issue, but says he isn't interested in challenging the vote.
