UNDATED (CNN) -- The verdict is guilty in the federal hate crimes case brought against Amish leader Sam Mullet Senior.

The Ohio man and 15 of his followers were convicted of conspiracy for breaking into the homes of rivals and forcibly cutting off their hair and beards.

Amish people consider cutting off hair and beards insulting and degrading, so the act is considered a religious hate crime.
