TEXARKANA, Ark. (AP) - Although it's still under construction, the new convention center in Texarkana has already landed an event for 2015.

The city announced Monday that Texarkana will host the Arkansas Governor's Conference on Tourism on March 2015. It's the first time the annual event will be held in Texarkana.

City Manager Harold Boldt says it's a "tremendous honor" to host the event, which draws up to 1,000 people and their families. The Texarkana Gazette reports that other contenders for the 2015 conference included Fayetteville, Rogers and Fort Smith.

Crews broke ground last fall on the $18 million convention center and hotel. A $22 million convention center is also being built across the state line in Texarkana, Texas.
