LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- They're called "man's best friend" for a reason.

Dogs continue to help with the fight against diabetes and now an Arkansas woman is getting assistance from her canine companion.

Lauren Civewright of Bryant took home her new diabetes alert dog following an interview on Today's THV. Her animal friend is a sweet and smart dog named Hope. The two-year-old was trained by Rachael Thornton at Wildrose Kennels in Oxford, Mississippi who is sad to see Hope leave, but excited that Lauren will be safe from now on.

Hope, and other diabetic alert dogs, are trained to smell when a person's blood sugar is too high or too low. They have different ways of telling their owner and they can also be trained to go for help or push a button to call 911.
