BROCKPORT, NY (CNN/WHAM) -- Five weeks into her freshman year, a New York college student was found murdered in her dorm room.
A freshman at the State University of New York College at Brockport, family members say Alexandra Kogut had been thrilled to be beginning her college education.
Kogut's mother called campus police Saturday morning when she couldn't reach her daughter.
The medical examiner says the 18-year-old died of blunt force trauma. Authorities described the crime as brutal.
Kogut's 21-year-old boyfriend was arrested hours after her body was found.
A student at another New York college, Clayton Whittemore now faces second-degree murder charges.
Student Nicole Jennings says, "It's really hard to think of her and not saying hi to her in the halls."
Brockport campus police say she was killed in an apparently safe environment and call it a tragedy for the college community.
