JONESBORO, Ark. (Ark. State University) - Senior linebacker Nathan Herrold of the Arkansas State University football team has claimed this week's Sun Belt Conference (SBC) Defensive Player of the Week as a result of his efforts in the Red Wolves' 36-29 conference home decision over South Alabama last Saturday (Oct. 13) night as announced this Monday (Oct. 15) by the conference.
Herrold registered a career-high 17 tackles (14 assisted) and posted his first career pass interception in the decision over South Alabama. His pass theft for a 38-yard return in ASU's Homecoming triumph stopped a USA drive at the A-State 22-yard line late in the second quarter to preserve a 14-13 Red Wolves' halftime lead.
Herrold's 17 stops in the contest were the most by a Sun Belt Conference player and tied for the 13th most tackles in a game nationally this season. Herrold, who has accumulated a conference-leading 69 stops this fall to date, also notched double-figure tackles for the third time this season and the sixth time in his ASU career.
Furthermore, the fifth-year senior has currently tallied at least a partial tackle for loss in six consecutive outings. His tackles output against South Alabama represented the most by an A-State player since 2005 when Tyrell Johnson racked up a SBC record 25 stops against North Texas.
This season, Herrold has compiled a team-high 69 tackles (29 solo) to go with 4.5 tackles for a loss of 15 yards in seven outings. The 6-3, 235-pound defender also has one sack for minus nine yards, three pass breakups, and two forcedfumbles along with one pass theft. He presently is tops among the conference leaders with a 9.86 tackles average and is tied for 22nd place nationally.
In his career, Herrold has amassed 254 total tackles (112 solo) , 13 tackles for loss (minus 41 yards), and 3.5 sacks (minus 16 yards).
Herrold's recognition this week represents the second time this season in which an A-State defensive player has claimed a league weekly honor. ASU sophomore linebacker Qushaun Lee earned the league's weekly distinction a week ago (Oct. 8) following his performance in a league victory at Florida International (Oct. 4).
The Red Wolves, who sport a 4-3 overall record and are 2-1 in the Sun Belt Conference to date this season, visit the Louisiana-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns next Tuesday (Oct. 23) evening at ULL's Cajun Field in Lafayette, La. A 7 p.m. (CT) start time is scheduled for the conference tilt which will be nationally televised on ESPN2 and also aired on flagship station 107.9 KIFN via the EAB Sports Radio Network.
