UNDATED (CNN) -- A man who underwent one of the most extensive facial transplants ever says he is "doing well".
The University of Maryland released a joint statement Tuesday with 37-year-old Richard Lee Norris.
Norris says after 15 years of wearing a mask he's happy to be able to go out and not be subjected to stares or comments on his looks.
In March, doctors replaced most of Norris' face, including his jaw, teeth and tongue.
He was injured back in a 1997 gun accident.
