DALLAS, Tx. (CNN) - An iconic figure that's welcomed vistors to the Texas State Fair for the past 60 years has gone up in smoke.

Firefighters rushed to "Big Tex" Friday morning, as the last weekend of the annual Fair in Dallas was just getting started.
All that's left is basically a charred metal skeleton.

Emergency officials said the fire started in a motor in the the 52-foot tall statue's neck that made it possible for him to "talk."

Crews have started removing what's left of Big Tex so no one gets hurt.

Fair officials are promising this isn't the end, that Big Tex will be back next year.
