  • GREENBRIER, Ark. (KTHV) -- For the first time, you'll get to meet some of the animals rescued in a fire on Friday. A mobile home fire killed 41 animals in Greenbrier, mostly dogs. Rescue groups took in more than 90 dogs and cats.

The sheriff's department says the homeowners will likely not be charged.

Five animal shelters including the Faulkner County Humane Society came to the rescue.

"When we headed out there, we didn't know what the situation was going to be," says Drew Spurgers, marketing director for the Faulkner County The Humane Society.

The homeowners tell us off camera, they've always loved dogs and cats, so they took in strays.

"These people are good people and had good intentions," says Spurgers.

The group took in 37 dogs and two cats out of the 90 plus surviving animals. They have Chihuahuas, Daschunds, and Pomeranians. While in quarantine, they're being tested and will eventually be spayed or neutered. Spurgers says for the most part, they don't appear to be malnourished or neglected.

"It appears they are mostly healthy. I spoke with our clinic employees and they only have one that is heart warm positive out of 25 dogs tested so far. That is amazing," says Spurgers.

It's a healthy outlook for the pets. As far as the homeowners, they're living in a bus behind their mobile home just a few feet away from the ashes. Although we didn't see any animals outside, they admitted to having one dog inside the bus. Although they've lost nearly everything, the couple hopes their pets will have a happy ending.

Other groups that rescued the animals: Wishing Well for Paws, Chihuahuas Rescue, P.S. I Love You, and Faulkner County SPCA.
