UNDATED (CNN) -- A management shakeup at Apple leads to two top executives being shown the door.

One was Scott Forstall. He was in charge of the iOS software running iPhones and iPads, and was often considered an heir-in-waiting to CEO Tim Cook.

Forstall was also behind the Apple's Maps software, a debacle that was widely mocked on social media.

Cook says a group of Apple executives will replace Forstall, sharing his responsibilities.

Apple also sent its widely criticized retail store chief, John Browett, packing after just nine months on the job.

Cook will oversee his responsibilities until a replacement is found.
