CEDAR FALLS, IA (CNN/KWWL) -- A child is recovering after reportedly being shot in the head by his five-year-old sister.
It happened at a Cedar Falls gun range in Iowa.
Police say the eight-year-old was taking part in target practice when he suffered a gunshot wound to the head.
No word on why the younger sibling was handling the weapon, but investigator's say a string of bad decisions led up to the shooting.
The shooting shocked even veteran officers.
Sheriff Tony Thompson says, "Very few times in law enforcement that you can look back on and say that's something that's going to stick with you. And this is one of those cases that's going to stick with you for awhile. It's one that makes you appreciate the opportunity to go home at night."
The county attorney will decide if anyone will face criminal charges for the shooting.
