Let's be clear, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is a work of fiction. It is based in fact only that Abraham Lincoln, some of the characters, and some of the events surrounding the movie were real. The filmmakers are not trying to rewrite or mess with history.
The sad part is that there are some people out there who will believe it is real. I blame society's obsession with Kim Kardashian.
Benjamin Walker (Flags of our Fathers) stars in the title role of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter as the young man from Illinois who witnesses his mother's death via vampire at an early age. Naturally when he's old enough, he seeks revenge and fails. In his quest, he encounters the mysterious Henry Sturgis (Dominic Cooper, Captain America: The First Avenger) who teaches him how to hunt and kill the demons of the night. Along his course of vengeance, he meets the future Mary Todd Lincoln (Mary Elizabeth Winstead, The Thing), debates Stephen Douglas, learns the (fictional) truth behind slavery, and eventually become President of the United States. So, it wraps the story around history's truth but it takes liberties in Lincoln's motivations for ending slavery in that the Vampires of the south are using slaves as food. Yes, part of it is that he does see the horror of how African Americans are treated but when he learns how they're used by the vampires, he really gets motivated.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter is a just a cool idea for a movie. The action wasn't really exciting, there were moments that should have caused some dry laughter but it fell flat. Overall, it was pretty ambitious but I get the sense that the director left a lot of things on the cutting room floor.
I have to give it 6 stars out of 11.
