UNDATED (CBS) - After starring in separate superhero movies over the years, "The Avengers" are teaming up in a single film. CBS sat down with the cast in Los Angeles and explains how one star ended up playing two roles.
Marvel superheroes are leaping from comic books to the big screen in the 3D action movie, The Avengers.
Chris Evans plays Captain America, but off-screen he played "Social Planner" for the cast including Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson and Chris Hemsworth. They all spent last summer shooting the movie in New Mexico. There are rumored text messages that would go out and simply say, "Avengers Assemble." Evans admits that was him. He says, "I tried to orchestrate some off-set entertainment. We're all in Albuquerque, no one is from there so after wrap you want to try to nurture these relationships because there's a good chance we'll make another one of these."
Even the Incredible Hulk got in on the action. For Mark Ruffalo, it was a break from shooting some uncomfortable scenes. He says, "Are you kidding me? The day I walked on set wearing a leotard, looking like a Chinese checkerboard and I'm like 'ROOOOAR' and they look at me like 'are you going to do it like that?"
Johansson, who packs a punch as the Black Widow, still pokes fun at the text messages. She says, "He'd say 'we're assembling at 8th street and Main' and I was like 'You dork!' But we love it though. We went to a great Motley Crue concert."
Robert Downey Jr.'s first "Iron Man" film laid the foundation for "The Avengers" four years ago. And now that these superheroes have finally joined forces to save the world, they're hoping to be a mighty force at the box office.
"The Avengers" opens in theaters May 4.
