UNDATED (CNN) - A little girl in Canada who faced death, now has a new lease on life. It's all thanks to surgeons and a half-sister who lives on the other side of the world.
There's a lot that separates Ashlyn and her half-sister Allison. They're a generation apart, and live nearly 12,000 kilometers away. But now, they're bound together by an organ transplant.
Ashlyn was diagnosed with a rare disorder called tyrosinema. Her liver had been unable to break down certain proteins. It degenerated and she needed a transplant. Help came from 21-year-old Allyson who lives in New Zealand. She and Ashlyn have the same father. They had met a few times before, and Allison says as soon as she found out her liver was a perfect match, she was on a plane.
