Press Release:
New VA Program Assists Central Arkansas Veterans in College
The Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS) recently launched a new Student Veteran Outreach Program aimed at helping Veterans transition to academic pursuits and successfully meet the mental rigors of college life.
Veterans in Central Arkansas are eligible to receive specialized services through the VA designed to help them overcome challenges that can interfere with academic and personal goals. Student veterans may seek services for a variety of reasons such as improving concentration in the classroom, anger management, developing healthy relationship skills, coping with grief, reducing isolation and avoidance behaviors, minimizing test-taking anxiety, addressing alcohol misuse, improved understanding of the post-deployment transition process and learning new skills for healthy transitions.
Services include:
*Education and treatment related to successful transitions from soldier to student and beyond
*Coaching and enhancement of personal strengths to best navigate the demands of college
*Brief screenings
*Individual therapy
*Group therapy
*Referral to VA specialty programs when applicable
*Connecting with appropriate available resources
The CAVHS Student Veteran Outreach team provides these supportive services to veterans over the telephone, via video technology installed in Community Based Outpatient Clinics, as well as in person at the Eugene J. Towbin VA Healthcare Center in North Little Rock.
Utilizing phone and other technology improves access to services and reduces costs to the veteran by allowing for counseling and coaching to veteran students at their convenience without always needing to travel to a clinic to see a service provider. Other students may choose to meet with a team member face-to-face via video technology or in person. By valuing the unique experiences and strengths within each student veteran, CAVHS's Student Veteran Outreach team seeks to empower and support the men and women who have served our nation.
