Craig's Twist: Remembering Dale Bumpers

Craig O'Neill remembers his experiences with the late Dale Bumpers

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- I was about to graduate ASU and was applying for a job at the legendary radio station, KAAY.

In 1972, their studios were caddy-corner from the State Capitol. After my job interview as I walked out the door, I came face-to-face with Governor Dale Bumpers, who was coming in for a taped interview.

He missed the top step and stumbled a little bit, stood up straight and said "I gotta quit drinking." Everyone around laughed heartily.

Over the next 44 years I would have dozens of occasions where we appeared at roasts and dinners and fundraisers and it was his sense of humor that I valued most.

He would begin every roast with the same comment: "Folks, haven't we got something better to do tonight."

I loved his humor and his casual speaking style that was so different from the 'grip the podium', formal way of speaking that allowed Bumpers to defeat Faubus, Rockefeller, and Fulbright.
