PERRYVILLE, Ark. (KTHV) -- Lake Sylvia Recreation Area played host for thousands of fifth-graders this week for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission's sixth Youth Outdoor Expo.
It was a field day for 1,000 youngsters to learn about nature and outdoor activities. Most of the kids come from Conway, Faulkner, Perry, Pope, Pulaski, Saline and Yell counties.
Lake Sylvia is a USDA Forest Service recreation site in the Ouachita National Forest about 30 miles west of Little Rock.
Students were able to try their hand at archery with compound bows, fishing and firing BB guns. They also learned about Arkansas wildlife and fish, boating safety, the AGFC dive team, deer stand safety, Hooked on Fishing - Not on Drugs, how to prevent poaching and other programs.
