JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - Gus Malzahn has served as part ambassador, part football coach so far during his short tenure at Arkansas State. The former Auburn offensive coordinator is eager to prove worthy of being both in his long-awaited first stint as a collegiate head coach.
Malzahn was hired by Arkansas State in December, a stunning move by a school usually relegated to the shadows of the ever-present and Southeastern Conference member University of Arkansas.
He was hired to replace current Mississippi coach Hugh Freeze, who guided the Red Wolves to a 10-win season and Sun Belt Conference championship last season.
Since his hiring, Malzahn has spent much of his time raising the profile of the Red Wolves. Now he's eager to prove worth of all the talk.
