Arkansas St pitcher honored for summer league play

JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas State pitcher Daniel Wright has been named a top performer by Perfectgame.org after his performance in the New England Collegiate Baseball League this summer.

School officials announced Wednesday that Wright was one of 20 players to receive the honor. He had an ERA of 3.92, struck out 42 batters and issued just 11 walks in 45 2/3 innings.

Wright played for the Newport Gulls, which finished with a 31-10 regular season record and advanced to the NECBL Playoffs. The Gulls went 6-1.

Wright went 2-0 in the playoffs with a 1.69 ERA, 16 strikeouts, four walks and eight hits in 16 innings of work.

He was also selected to start in the NECBL All-Star Game where he pitched one inning and struck out one batter.
