    Southland Conference names football players of the week

    FRISCO, Texas (Southland Conference) - Central Arkansas junior quarterback Wyrnick Smothers has been named the Southland Conference Offensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday. McNeese State junior safety Terence Cahee was named the defensive player of the week while Stephen F. Austin sophomore kicker Jordan Wiggs was named the conference's special teams player of the week.

    Offensive Player of the Week: Wynrick Smother, Central Arkansas

    Smothers threw four touchdown passes and ran for another as the Bears beat Northwestern State 35-14 to earn the Southland Conference's automatic bid in to the NCAA Division I Playoffs. The junior from Destrehan, La. (Destrehan H.S.), had 322 total yards of offense, with touchdown passes of 20, 33, 26 and 42 yards, and also had a 57-yard touchdown run. His 97 rushing yards on 11 carries were a career high. He completed 18 of 27 passes for 225 yards.

    Honorable Mention: Jordan Edwards, Lamar; Darius Carey, McNeese State; Timothy Flanders, Sam Houston State.

    Defensive Player of the Week: Terence Cahee, McNeese State

    Cahee recorded 10 tackles and intercepted his first pass of the season to lead McNeese State to a 42-10 win at Nicholls State. The interception came on Nicholls' first possession of the fourth quarter to halt the Colonels inside the red zone. He also had 10 tackles, nine solo, and broke up two passes. It was the third consecutive game Cahee, a junior from Westlake, La. (Westlake H.S.), who leads the team with 81 tackles on the season, has had double-digit tackles. The Cowboys registered four interceptions against Nicholls.

    Honorable Mention: Darius Taylor, Sam Houston State; Darren Robinson, Stephen F. Austin; Justin Williams, Central Arkansas; Chad Allen, Lamar.

    Special Teams Player of the Week: Jordan Wiggs, Stephen F. Austin

    Wiggs was perfect on kicks in the Lumberjacks' 40-26 win over Lamar. The sophomore from Grand Prairie, Texas (South Grand Prairie H.S.), connected on all four PATs and made four field goals to finish the game with 16 points. He hit from 33, 29, 27 and 21 yards. He has made 13 of 17 field goals this season and leads the Lumberjacks in scoring with 68 points.

    Honorable Mention: Kenneth Jenkins, Sam Houston State; Jean Breaux, McNeese State; Kevin Buford, Central Arkansas.

    Each school's sports information director nominates and votes for the players of the week, though is not permitted to vote for his own player. To receive honorable mention, a player must receive votes from 25 percent of the Southland sports information directors.
