Torres-Lopez signs professional contract

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (Univ. of Ark.) - After posting career-best numbers in her senior season with the University of Arkansas volleyball team, Janeliss Torres-Lopez will continue her volleyball career onto the professional stage. She has signed a professional contract to play with Leonas de Ponce of the Puerto Rico Superior League.
During the Razorbacks' 2012 campaign, Torres-Lopez established career highs with 220 kills, 122 total blocks and a .343 hitting percentage. She also led the team in blocks per set. In the year-end Southeastern Conference statistical rankings, Torres-Lopez finished seventh in hitting percentage and 10th in blocks per set.
The Salinas, Puerto Rico, native had 22 matches during the year with at least six kills out of the middle, hitting at least .33 in 19 of those matches. Defensively, she had 27 matches with three total blocks or more. Torres-Lopez recorded a career-high .700 hitting percentage in Arkansas' four-set win over LSU. In the match, she had a season-high 15 kills on 20 attacks with just one hitting error.
Following a standout weekend at No. 21 Tennessee and Georgia, Torres-Lopez was named the SEC Defensive Player of the Week (Sept. 24). During the road trip, she averaged 1.57 blocks per set and helped the Razorbacks limit their opponents to a .117 hitting percentage.
Offensively, she hit .419 in the two matches with 2.29 kills per set.Torres-Lopez will join former Razorback teammate Roslandy Acosta in the Puerto Rico Superior League. Acosta signed on with Valencianas de Juncos. Former Arkansas standout Yarleen Santiago (1997-99) also plays volleyball in the Puerto Rican league.
