Bears sweep Southland player of week honors

CONWAY, Ark. (UCA) - University of Central Arkansas outfielder Forrestt Allday and pitcher Bryce Biggerstaff swept the weekly Southland Conference Hitter and Pitcher of the Week honors on Tuesday.

In leading the Bears to a 3-1 week, that included a 9-3 win over Kansas and two wins against Jackson State, Allday was 8 for 16 at the plate with a pair of doubles and five RBI. The senior from Friendswood, Texas, went 2 for 3 with a run scored and two walks in a 10-2 loss at No. 2 Vanderbilt on Wednesday. He was 5 for 5 with three runs scored and a walk in a 19-4 victory over Jackson State on Friday and had two RBI against Kansas on Saturday and again Sunday in the 13-0 win over Jackson State.

For the season, he is hitting .467 with an on-base percentage of .553.

Biggerstaff threw Central Arkansas' second career no-hitter in Sunday's 13-0 win over the Tigers, striking out a career-high nine batters. The junior from Sherwood had a perfect game through five innings before hitting the first batter of the sixth inning. He sailed through eight innings, then struck out the first two batters in the ninth and got a ground ball in front of the plate that catcher Michael Marietta gunned to first for the final out.
In addition to picking up the conference pitcher of the week honor, Biggerstaff was named a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week on Monday and the NCBWA national pitcher of the week on Tuesday. In two starts this season, he is 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA.

UCA hosts Mississippi Valley State today (4 p.m.) and Wednesday (1 p.m.) at Bear Stadium.
