FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - The Student Athletic Advisory Committee competed in a recent RSO Recycling Competition, placing first among all registered student organizations. The competition was part of RecycleMania 2013, a nationwide competition challenging colleges to promote waste reduction activities, increase recycling rates, and decrease waste, held from Feb. 3 through March 30.
The SAAC collecting 3,796 pounds of materials, leading the competition, which helped recycle a total of 8,295 pounds of recyclable materials. SAA collected more than double the amount of the second place organization, Kappa Kappa Psi, which finished with 1,715 points.
Seventeen registered student organizations participated in the contest. This was the first year of the recycling competing, and the efforts of SAAC will go a long way to helping save over four tons of materials from the landfill, and helping the University of Arkansas in winning the competition with other SEC schools. In 2011, Arkansas won the SEC competition in two separate categories. The next part of the RecycleMania competition is a book and e-waste collection drive, held throughout the month of March.
"The even was a lot of fun," said Lizzy Whitbeck, Arkansas swimmer and SAAC member. "We're trying to build up our organization so that we're better known, and we decided to enter this contest to get our name out there."
"We were blown away by the enthusiasm and participation in this contest," said Carlos Ochoa, director of the office for sustainability. "On the very last day of the competition, we had people constantly bringing in bags and bags of recycling, sometimes four truckloads at once."
